Mary Wiebersick

Wiebersick's "Conflict Crew" project involves a club of grade-school students trained to mediate conflicts. Concerned mostly with problems that may arise on the playground during recess, club members receive training in different areas of conflict resolution and, by example, provide a structure for peer mediation of minor difficulties. Members are recognized for their service at school and in the community and receive certain rewards and privileges. The project keeps the spirit of volunteerism alive at school, enhances communication skills, and contributes to a calmer, safer environment more conducive to learning.
