"Solar Synchopation," the winning program designed by Parish, is intended to educate the students and the community about energy derived from the sun and increase the interest and understanding about the production, benefits and practical applications of solar power. Through a unique partnership between the environmental science students and the jazz band student performers, musical performances will be used to showcase how solar power works. They will also calculate how much energy is required to meet the needs of performances of different time lengths, determine the equipment and configuration necessary to collect and store the energy required to supply the power, and determine the number and types of photovoltaic panels, number and type of batteries and estimated charge time of the "battery bank". More than 70 of Parish's students will directly benefit from this program, but numerous members of the community will also benefit because the program includes a peer/community education and outreach component. Parish lives in San Francisco.
