Life Learning Academy High School

Brock’s innovative teaching idea, “Maker Class,” is a project-based approach for disconnected youth to engage with principles of science, technology, engineering, art, and math in practical ways. By decreasing the technology gap that is prevalent among disconnected youth, students will build their project management skills, resourcefulness, self-efficacy, and confidence. The class takes students through the process of ideation and turning that into reality — an experience that is often lacking in overly-scripted high school classrooms. Brock’s 70 students will generate product ideas, identify design constraints, and create prototypes using computer-aided design software, hand tools, and manufacturing equipment. Ultimately, Brock hopes the project will further deepen students’ accessibility to opportunities for participation in key growth employment sectors in the Bay Area.
