Camden Elementary School

Ranges winning "Read Every Day (RED)" mentoring program, will benefit more than 200 students in kindergarten through fourth grade at Camden Elementary School. This program will not only improve student learning and reading, but also the leadership skills in the more experienced readers who end up mentoring. They will learn how to be sensitive to other students' needs as well as how to build a relationship with younger students. This program incorporates a new component to the guided reading currently used. According to Ranges, guided reading fosters comprehension skills and strategies, develops background knowledge and oral language skills, and provides as much instructional-level reading as possible. The overall goal of guided reading is to ensure that every child, regardless of where they are on the road to literacy, is provided with appropriate opportunities for reaching their potential. The "Read Every Day" program will help replenish a leveled library, provide workshops for students, and develop high school mentors and a schedule to utilize them during the school day. Each mentored child will have read 30 minutes a day on their independent level. Ranges lives in Camden.
