Mustang Academy

Hanks’ innovative teaching idea, “Buck the System,” focuses on increasing the self-esteem and self-worth of the students at Mustang Academy through the development of intrinsic motivation. In this alternative school environment, students involved in the program will work to establish a goat farm. As part of their roles, students will be tasked with raising the goats, developing a work schedule as well as the manufacturing and selling of goat byproducts. They will work to develop a business plan, brand, packaging materials, advertising campaign, and website. In the classroom environment, students will learn about proper animal care, leadership, small business practices, graphic design, and how to manufacture products. In addition, the goats will serve as therapy animals for the students who tend to need an outlet for anxiety, impulse control, and anger management.
