Andover, MA
High Plain Elementary School

Harkins’ innovative teaching idea, “Dream Planet Project,” will help 90 second grade students learn about space travel and exploration through project-based learning. Students will imagine a dream planet that has yet to be discovered. They will learn how astronauts and scientists travel to space, explore new planets, map environments and the principals of flight. This project will also use resources from the Space Camp and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Students will engage in activities such as exploring Mars soil analysis, building water bottle rockets and hot air balloons, facilitating the Mars rover egg drop, playing a solar system bead game, and eating edible rocks.
