Johnson's "Shutterbug Club" is an after-school project that uses photography to reinforce and expand various subjects explored in class. As students record outside images and experiences with individual 35mm cameras, they connect the results with classroom study to improve knowledge and understanding. For example, the act of balancing light and shadow in a photograph might be compared to balancing an algebraic equation. Students maintain a "tech journal" to track photographs and concepts. By using photography to complement standard curriculum (instead of teaching it as a separate subject), the project increases learning and participation by engaging students' imaginations.
