The winning "Reaching Back" program developed by Booth is designed to give 25 students from Warren Easton Charter High School's Interact Club and 25 students from Dibert Elementary School an opportunity to facilitate and learn science lessons respectively. Twice a month, the high school students will present mini science lessons to fourth graders. The overall objective of the project is to enable students to reinforce chemistry concepts that they have learned in the class by synthesizing ways to explain those concepts and brainstorming ways to present the information to younger students in a way they can understand. With teacher assistance, the students will be the facilitators, giving them the opportunity to use concepts learned in the class to impact their community positively. According to Booth, research shows that students retain 90 percent of the information they teach others. This program is designed to reinforce those findings by allowing the high school students the opportunity to lead and teach others younger than them. Booth resides in New Orleans.
