Schrader's program titled, "Take It Outside" is an effort to help 7th and 8th-grade students at Cheney Middle School understand how their classroom lessons apply to their everyday lives through a variety of math and science instructional projects. For example, students will travel to Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge and Eastern Washington University to collect specimens of plants and assess how the photosynthetic rate of these plants affects surrounding wildlife. Outdoor learning sessions like this are designed to ultimately help students understand how organisms in ecosystems interact with and respond to changes in their environment. By intentionally including math and science as part of these hands-on lessons, participants will also have an opportunity to make a direct connection to their everyday lives. Schrader lives in Cheney.
