Tami’s innovative teaching idea, “The Science of Reading,” focuses on improving reading proficiency among second grade students. Tami noticed that literacy rates in our country are unacceptable. Students are leaving the primary grade levels without the proper foundation for learning to read. Based on research-proven methods and resources for teaching that are shown to improve the education and literacy in systematic, yet engaging, ways, Tami aims to increase her students’ reading readiness. She plans to do this by implementing strategies that align to all five components of literacy — phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency. Through the Voya grant, she hopes to provide interactive, multi-sensory classroom resources that help to accomplish this — and more — with research-based methods.
