Shideler’s innovative teaching idea, “Tiger Book Club,” will provide literacy opportunities to third grade students by providing them with backpacks full of books that they will take home on the weekend and read in their home environment. This will also increase the school to home connection. After reading the books, students will complete a survey that is then passed on to the next reader, creating a peer-to-peer connection. In addition, the principal will hold book club meetings during the day with the students who sign up for the club. The overall goal of this project is to make resources and literature available to students in their home environment — especially for those who may not otherwise have the necessary means to do so.
