Terra’s innovative teaching idea, “Sowing Forensic STEM Seeds,” is focused on helping students explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers by using forensics to unlock their intellectual curiosity. This project will teach students how to separate, visualize and analyze DNA as opposed to just looking at pictures and using pop beads. Students can then use this information to identify the perpetrator of a crime scenario by applying investigation techniques and using technology similar to what students see on popular television shows. This project will teach students how to collect real-time data and work together in teams. They will explore forensic entomology and microbiology through the analysis of microbes and insects. These experiences will increase students’ science knowledge, improve their technology skills and expose them to STEM careers.
