Using mathematics as a common theme between parents, students and other international students is the idea behind Smith's "Say YES to Math!" program at Edison Elementary School. This monthly math night for families wanting enrichment or remedial training in the subject will allow students in grades K-6 to receive more educational support in their homes. Each math night will allow families to get tutoring in relevant, everyday math. The children and families will make games and books to improve in fractions, measurement, basic facts, money, time skills, problem-solving and geometry. These materials will be shared with a Chinese school each semester where Smith teaches English during the summers. During her time in China, Smith learns Chinese math techniques that she brings back to her school and shares with the students. In the end, this project gets parents involved not only in their child's learning, but it helps to foster international relations between the two schools. The idea shows the students how important math is around the world. Smith resides in Lawton.
