Compton's "Lend Me Your Ears" is an English program aimed at below-level, rural high school Special Needs and English as a Second Language (ESOL) students that introduces reading and listening skills through the use of audio books. Students will illustrate comprehension through a series of activities such as: keeping a listening journal to describe characters and events as they appear in the story, prepare both a conventional book report and one on the audio production, analyze characters and traits, create a vocabulary list and increase fluency. The objectives of this program are to introduce reluctant readers to audio books, build vocabulary and enhance the appreciation of language, increase literacy and listening skills, and allow less able readers to experience books as a source of enjoyment and recreation.
