Chatt Hills Charter Elementary School

Cameron and his colleagues’ innovative teaching idea, “My Fine Feathered Friends,” reflects the school’s three areas of emphasis: the arts, environment and agriculture. The project will introduce the school's 284 students to the wild birds found in the community as one component of it’s overall environmental curriculum. The first phase of the project will be to build a beneficial habitat for wild birds outside of each grade's classroom area. Children will manage their habitat's feeding stations, observe the birds' use of nesting boxes and document what they learn. Wild bird learning modules will be developed to build the students' skills in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies. Students will build a nesting box and bird feeder to create a bird habitat for their family to enjoy at home and become their family's teacher of what they have learned about their wild birds.
