Coal City, WV
Coal City Elementary School

Hutchens’ innovative teaching idea, “Osmo Learning System,” focuses on nurturing an authentic learning experience through coding. Students will be able to interact with five word sets that can be used to engage with spelling words and sight words. This will allow students to increase their reading ability, which is a primary goal in first grade. Students will gain 21st century coding skills through this system using Coding Awbie, Coding Jam, and Coding Due. It will also allow students to bring their art to life and encourage creativity. With the Voya grant, Hutchens plans to purchase a classroom edition of the Osmo Learning System which transcends all content areas and provides students with integrated learning opportunities. Through real and practical experiences with coding, Hutchens aims to provide students with skills in an engaging and original way.
