Students with mental disabilities often have difficulty applying what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations. Williams saw this disconnect as an opportunity to create a program that not only offers students a chance to receive assistance in developing these skills, but also a chance for interpersonal growth and socialization with community members. Her "Community Skills for Life Learning" program provides approximately 16 students each year at Clinton Jr. High School with instruction inside the classroom that can be applied to outside experiences. Students visit grocery stores, the post office, drug stores, restaurants and fitness centers in an effort to learn how to function independently in a variety of settings. Williams believes that becoming an active member of society also includes increasing students' ability to care for their personal affairs and the program includes a component in each lesson that covers making appropriate clothing choices, purchasing grooming supplies, and counting money. This program not only enhances the quality of life for participating students, it also provides opportunities for them to make their own choices, improve self-esteem and social communication, expand money skills, and have fun while learning. Williams resides in Clinton.
