Gallant's "C.L.U.E." (Children's Literature Undeniable Effects) project increases sixth graders' understanding of science by using children's literature to improve comprehension. Scientific relevance is created through an "interwoven text" method, using pairs and sets of texts that explore common themes. The resulting synthesis leads to inquiry-based exploration that allows students to better conceptualize and comprehend. By turning a science lab into a literature-rich classroom, the project helps students develop cognitive strategies and relate them to the standard science curriculum.
