"Makin' It Real," the winning program created by Bixler, is a math-based program designed for the seventh and eighth-grade students at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary to take the math out of the classroom and into the real world. Students will be introduced to a number of careers in the mathematics field to foster interest in these areas. With an emphasis on critical thinking, students will develop WebQuests to showcase a variety of mathematics-based professions and the skills needed to perform those careers. The students will also be paired with elementary students on a monthly basis to help develop the math skills necessary to succeed in higher grade levels. Bixler's students will share their knowledge of how math is used in the real world by producing computer-based elementary level math activities for the younger students to complete. They will also see how math is used in the real world by visiting local businesses to view math in action. Bixler resides in Lexington.
