Scott Mann

Mission Viejo, CA
Trabuco Hills High School

Mann’s winning innovative teaching idea is developing a “Financial Literacy Unit” related to credit scores, student loan debt, investments, savings, and taxes. As a teacher of the approximately 300 graduating seniors, he developed a program to help students understand the concept of debt and the challenges of debt. Through what they learn in the program, they will be able to understand how to attend a college efficiently without accumulating large amounts of debt, build a great credit score without misusing credit cards, save for retirement, understand compound interest, and file their taxes prior to the April 15 deadline. Mann, who lives in Irvine, hopes the use of financial applications via iTunes and Apple iPad will enhance and engage the learning process by using technology familiar to students.
