Metro's winning program at Ponaganset High School is the revamping of the "PHS Book Club" with a touch of technology. The Kindle, an electronic reader, is being introduced to the book club to strengthen reading skills among at-risk students and additional students and faculty who love books. The objective of the club is adopted from the American Libraries Association. The PHS Book Club seeks to show that reading can be a source of pleasure, a tool for self-exploration, and a meaningful way to connect to the wider world. In addition to encouraging critical thinking skills, the book club will make reading a social experience through group discussions as well as an individual activity by reading high-interest and life-relatable books. Metro is an English teacher and resides in Warwick.
