Sara Damon

Damon's "Creating Firewise Communities" program actively involves students in wildfire prevention in their own community. Through the program, students work in collaboration with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and local fire departments to investigate the causes and effects of urban-edge wildfires, using a variety of state-of-the-art geographic systems. By using their findings to pinpoint danger areas, to provide homeowners with fire-risk information and recommendations for fire prevention, and to develop a model for wildfire risk assessment, students are able to learn new skills while providing a valuable public service to the community.
