Allan's "Genetics Counselor Project" is a one-week Biology project that allows students to use their newly-acquired genetic knowledge to learn more about genetic defects that may affect their own children some day. Students work in a group of two or three and assume the role of a genetic counselor. Their task is to assemble a three-tiered portfolio of information to present to imaginary "clients," parents who have a child with a genetic disorder. Students are required to research the disorder and interview two professionals during a "genetics conference." Students who participate in this project improve critical thinking and complex comprehension skills. They also gain a greater understanding of disabilities, increasing tolerance and eliminating fear.
