Tomney's "Community Views: Art Within the Community" program teaches students the connection between art and the community where it originates, and that art is often a means to communicate a message. In turn, the project calls on students to create an exhibit reflective of their diverse community. Prior to the creation of their exhibit, students use the Internet to view art from museums throughout the world. Students then determine a local theme and outline an exhibit that's representative of their school community. By working in teams, students actually build their vision by tackling the tasks involved with the gallery layout, art presentation, installation, advertising the event and opening night. The students work with various types of art such as ceramics, painting and photography to build an exhibit that is reflective of themselves and the community.
