Howard Dobbs Elementary School
Grubb wants to help 54, fourth and fifth-grade students with no computer access at home further develop their language arts, technology and social studies skills through a program titled, "This Could Be MARVELous!" Utilizing the book format of renowned comic strips creator Marvel Comics, participants will be given disposable cameras to capture images of their families and culture for use with various technology projects. Students will learn to transfer digital images to specific software programs like Photo Story or Comic Book Creator; compare and contrast a storybook with a comic book; and create their own stories using the photos they have taken. After completing this half-day, week-long camp, students will serve as tutors to other Howard Dobbs Elementary students. Grubb hopes the innovative program will help students build their basic computer skills and self-esteem while increasing students' and parents' knowledge of technology. She also hopes parents will begin to seek local resources like the public library that offer free computer access more frequently. Grubb is a resident of Rockwall.
