Tyvand's "Shoot for the Stars" astronomy project engages at-risk freshmen and sophomores in science. Faculty and students work together to develop the project's four components: integration across subject areas, project-based learning, service learning, and educational field trips. Students build and use their own telescope; conduct Internet research and develop a PowerPoint presentation on the past, present and future of the U.S. Space Program; and write a science fiction story. They also participate in a service learning project using a portable planetarium with local elementary school students. The project culminates with an overnight trip to Pine Mountain Observatory to view the night sky through professional telescopes.
