Nielson's "Math with Manipulatives" uses art principles to make abstract concepts such as fractions, percentages and decimals concrete through the physical act of creating a quilt block. Students combine their individual blocks into a quilt. The project helps students understand that mathematics is not an isolated discipline, but that it has far-reaching relationships with many disciplines.
