Perkins' "Every Student Learns" project uses technology to help address the needs of recent immigrant students learning English as a second language. The project helps students who struggle with speaking, reading and writing English, as well as using technology, by allowing them to check out "learning kits" from the school library for use during evenings and on weekends. The kits consist of backpacks that are each equipped with a basic AlphaSmart word processor, calculator, dictionary, almanac, atlas, tape recorder, and prerecorded textbooks. The backpacks allow students to practice English and complete school assignments at their own pace at home, while developing technology skills necessary for success in other academic areas. Parents of the students are updated on the program and kept informed of their child's progress, and teachers are better able to evaluate assignments and assist in student learning.
