Calos' "The Patterns of Time" is a program that allows students to bring history alive through the use of digital sound and video. It combines technology, theater, social studies and language arts to address an overarching historical theme using film as a medium. Students in grades 5-8 will create films, using iMovie, illustrating an annual theme such as gender roles throughout history, influential figures and historical turning points. The Patterns of Time will culminate annually with a film festival and forum that will be open to the public. Students will take an active role in all aspects of film making, from the creation of a script, the designing of a screenplay, directing, acting and editing. The forum also will allow community members to enhance student understanding by adding their own perspectives by generating meaningful discussions on current events and topics relating to the historical themes.
