Phillip Baioni and Patti Weinstein

2010
Painesville, OH
Riverside High School

Baioni and Weinstein's winning program, "Virtual Manipulation of Cellular Pro," is designed to help students gain a deeper understanding of mitosis; the process by which a cell separates the chromosomes in the nucleus into two identical sets of nuclei. Students will be able to construct a cell model, allowing them to comprehend the architecture of a cell. They will work in cooperative learning groups to create a performance-based project on mitosis. Each movement of the cell separation will be photographed using a digital camera. Those photographs will then be used to create a computer generated presentation that accurately displays the process of mitosis. The educational videos will then be uploaded to video sharing websites, allowing the students to share their work globally.
