Many students across the nation struggle with reading. At Burke High School, more than half of the current 540 ninth-graders read below their grade-level. Swanson has addressed this problem with "Project READ (Reading Encourages Academic Development)". Two hundred ninth-grade readers will have the opportunity to achieve success through supplemental reading and an intervention program. A prescriptive, interactive, web-based computer program will serve as a reading intervention program. The students will work from their level of competency. This program will be accessible to students from the classroom to their homes via the Internet. Swanson resides in Omaha.
