Rodriguez’s innovative teaching idea, “Falcon News,” is designed to allow students to explore the history and future of the American newspaper industry while learning reporting skills and concepts. The program will serve as the foundation for the launch of Falcon News, a monthly school newspaper that will be produced in print and online. Students who will be recruited are those interested in starting a school newspaper, but also interested in the media and the world around them. Students will be better prepared to serve their school community by first gaining an understanding of multiple mediums and how each influences different aspects of their lives. Through this program, participating fourth through eighth grade students will learn the importance and power of the media, along with reporting, interviewing, writing and photography skills. Students in the program will also research and prepare information for school social media channels and coordinate postings and schedules.
