Patrick Dorn

Dorn's "Veterans' Recognition Project" allows students to produce a celebration honoring local veterans. Sixth-graders videotape, photograph, and interview veterans, turn the interviews into bound biographies, create a Web site, create a slide show for the celebration, perform fieldwork at the local VFW's annual POW/MIA day, and research U.S. wars, the flag, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Eighth-graders perform six patriotic songs representing various historic periods, study the function of bands in the military, host guest speakers, keep journals, and work in small groups to present program notes for the celebration.
