Larkey’s innovative teaching idea, “Pre-Owned is Better,” involves the purchase of used band instruments so more students short on resources can participate in band. Quality, used band instruments can be purchased at 10 percent to 40 percent off retail. A new tuba can cost $3,500 to $8,500 compared to a used one for only $900 to $1,600. A used clarinet can cost $750. Used, the same instrument can cost between $25 and $125. The overall goal is to teach inner city students how to increase purchasing power by using their money wisely. Students who participate in the inter-disciplinary band program tend to perform better in math, literature, and science. Also, many times, students come to school because of the social connection with band. They feel if they miss school, they are letting their band friends down. Additionally, instruction in the band classes stress problem solving skills, use of reference materials, form analysis, engineering of the instruments, science of sound, incorporation of math, study skills and brain theory.
