Ehly's "Reading on the Run" program is designed to be a family-friendly program that promotes reading outside of school. Each week, students select a "theme"-oriented backpack to take home that includes several age-appropriate books and a related fun educational activity to do with their family. An example would be a backpack filled with the children's books "Blueberries for Sal," "Brown Bear, Brown Bear," and "Bear Wants More," along with a package of blueberry muffin mix, a muffin tin and a bear potholder. Each week children choose a new backpack with a different theme and books matching their reading skill level. While promoting reading and encouraging parents' involvement in their children's education, the program's goal is to expose students to a variety of new literature and foster a lifelong love of reading.
