Scheidt's "Fantasy Baseball" project is an elective class that uses baseball as a context for teaching important mathematical concepts such as statistics, probability and proportional reasoning. Students research and report on historical baseball figures using resources available through the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Students use technology such as calculators, computers and the Internet to complete a detailed assessment that demonstrates their mathematical understanding as well as their written and oral communication skills while showcasing their creative side. A trip to a professional baseball game and a friendly playoff competition among the students mark the culmination of the project.
