Michael Powell
Powell’s innovation teaching idea, “No Child Left Inside EcoCampus,” at John B. Cary Elementary School will serve as a state and national model of a comprehensive, innovative, environmental, STEAM-centered (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) program. The school’s Eco-Campus is a model sustainable campus and the project’s goal is to influence lawmakers to create state and national legislation (The No Child Left Inside Act) that will allow schools in the United States, specifically those with an aging infrastructure, to have outdoor classroom spaces. In addition, the No Child Left Inside Eco-Campus project will ignite and sustain student passion for lifelong STEAM learning in an experiential educational environment. To bring his program to fruition, Powell will work with the Chesapeake Bay Alliance, Kiwanis Club, Virginia Department of the Forestry, Science Museum of Virginia, Maymont Gardens, State University School of Agriculture and the 4H Club.
