Townsend, MT
Broadwater High School
Whitfield's program, the "Weed Bio-Control & GPS/GIS Enterprise Project," is designed to prepare students to become "land stewards" to help protect the environment from harmful weeds that are destroying lands throughout the United States. Students will run a school-based business where they will learn cutting -edge knowledge in studying weeds and growing bugs that "eat" weeds. At the same time, they will get the experience of running a business and all that it involves. The goal is to increase the number of places that grow insects for pest control and eventually sell the insects to the public to help reduce weed control costs. Whitfield, who lives in Townsend, hopes that the students will educate others on how to make a real difference in the world and in their own community.
