Melodee Knopp

Girard, KS
R.V. Haderlein Elementary School

Knopp’s innovative teaching idea, “Project Apollo 2.0,” focuses on nurturing a cross curricular learning expedition that capitalizes on students' natural inquisitiveness about space exploration and the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. Lessons from core subjects are incorporated into the classroom curriculum and feature a simulated moon landing where classes cooperate to complete their mission. Missions will vary according to grade level and be aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core math and reading standards. The simulated moon landing will be an immersive artificial environment, so students can gain a better understanding of the concepts taught using the motivating theme of space exploration as a tool. Through concrete experiences designing and building solar ovens, lunar habitats, and radiation fields, Knopp aims to increase student understanding of critical science concepts.
