Megan Garnett

Fairfax, VA
Robinson Secondary School
Garnett's "E Pluribus Unum: Highlighting Diversity to Combat Intolerance" program will tackle bigotry in a way few high schools do. Traditional high school United States History courses often overlook key stories related to U.S. race relations in order to prepare students for standardized tests. With this new elective offering, students at Robinson Secondary School can learn about lesser-known cases of intolerance and apply historic lessons to the racial issues of today, all while strengthening their writing, researching, speaking, and critical-thinking skills. Currently, about 100 students are signed up for the course. Additional lesson plans and activities will be offered to other teachers to highlight multicultural perspectives and issues across disciplines. The grant monies will aid in building up the classroom library with materials that focus on ethnic history. Garnett seeks to empower her students to affect change and promote a better future for tomorrow's society. She resides in Fairfax.
