MacGregor’s innovative teaching idea, “Saving Our Bayous,” is designed to help students take a proactive approach to conservation efforts by studying the local bayous. According to MacGregor, many gulf coast residents are concerned about poor water quality and habitat loss resulting from natural disasters and human environmental impacts. Students will take ownership of the problems through activities that increase their awareness of and competence in addressing issues. Students will study environmental and geological features of the immediate gulf coast and will learn how to assess and monitor water, soil, and sand quality. In real and simulated field work, students will collect data using sensors and other equipment and technology. They will then analyze and interpret the data and propose solutions to the problems and challenges they uncover. Students will collaborate on ways to present their findings to the public and policy makers so that solutions can be implemented.
