Washington's "Building Literacy Opportunities with Communication Skills and Assistive Technology" project provides the foundation for reading and writing skills for Special Education students, many of whom are non-readers and non-verbal. The project incorporates adaptive interactive books, voice-output devices, and other aids to help these students learn functional literacy skills. Without the project, many of them would not have the opportunity to benefit from alternative teaching methods and materials. Students also participate in community outings and activities that integrate their developing abilities.
