The "Exploring Diversity Through Technology" program created by Mathias encourages students in the seventh and eighth grades to research their heritage and share their history with others. William J. Clark Middle School consists of students who are socially, economically and ethnically diverse. Mathias decided to create a project that will encourage students to learn more about their culture and the cultures of others. More than 120 students will write biographies and find additional information to support their research. They will check out a camera and interview family members, take and compile old photographs, and make short videos. Their findings will be transferred to a PowerPoint presentation, which will be accompanied by a narration. All work will also be saved on CDs and presented to the class. Volunteers will later share their work at a PTSA meeting. The goal is for students to discover how all cultures have contributed to civilization. The vision of "Exploring Diversity Through Technology" is to create an appreciation among students for others and build a safer school and community. Mathias resides in Lexington.
