Hoffmann's "Geometry: What a Discovery!" project empowers students to learn and retain more about mathematics by emphasizing hands-on discoveries and self-directed learning. Using calculators with built-in geometry software and advanced math functions, students do their own investigations and formulate definitions and geometric concepts through discovery. They also incorporate writing into the math classroom as they explain investigations on worksheets to help gain insight and understanding. The standard lecture and memorization model is de-emphasized as the teacher assumes the role of mentor and facilitator, guiding the students in self-directed groups.
