Margaret Shelburg

Shelburg's "Hooked on a Feeling" project uses hands-on activities to enable grade-school students to have a better understanding of what people with disabilities face. With emphasis on physical education and movement, students explore the road blocks disabled people encounter on a daily basis through specific exercises, role playing, and by viewing relevant videotapes. As students develop awareness, they gain greater compassion for disabled peers. In addition, the project enhances writing skills as students share their understanding of disabilities and how they plan to further awareness.
