Carr’s innovative teaching idea, “Innovation Station,” is focused on fostering creativity in her kindergarten classroom through a station where students can design, build and solve problems with a variety of materials such as blocks, roadways, gears, magnets, vehicles, community buildings and street signs. Carr says the objective of this program is to increase student achievement in math, science, social studies, and literacy through critical thinking and problem solving. Through developmentally appropriate play-based learning, students will benefit by increasing language as they gain enthusiasm for building and designing. Students will be able to compare and contrast their projects to their peers. Additionally, the materials for this station have been selected to include science, social studies, literacy, and math topics so that students are integrating knowledge from a broad range of content areas.
