North Shore Community School

Markon and Tamburro’s innovative teaching idea, “ESY Kitchen Carts,” is focused on implementing “kitchen classrooms" into the school’s classrooms, to teach students about nutrition and healthy eating habits. The teachers recently attended the Edible Schoolyard in Berkley, and are bringing that curriculum — which empowers students with the knowledge and values to make food choices that are healthy for them, their communities, and the environment — to their classrooms. The school is also working toward establishing a sustainable garden that will benefit the community of learners by providing interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students and nutritional food for their cafeteria. As the only K-6 edible schoolyard of its kind in the area, Markon and Tamburro hope that students will take and transfer what they learn at school and apply it in the real world and at home.
