Lucy Komichak

"Fit or Fat?," the winning program by Komichak, will address the issue of childhood obesity. The projects' lessons will model the campaign by First Lady Michelle Obama, "Let's Move - Americans Move to Raise a Healthier Generation for Kids". Students in the program at Whitney M. Young Middle School will first analyze how media messages influence health behaviors and how the environment impacts personal health. They will identify commercials that entice them to make unhealthy choices and describe how their peers influence their decisions. The students will look at nutritional labels on common snack foods, work online to incorporate technology into the lessons, and share food logs with other children around the world. Students will also visit a local restaurant and determine which foods have the least fat content and are the healthiest to eat. They will do the same with the breakfast and lunch menus at their school and work with the school's kitchen staff to develop menus with healthier choices. Komichak lives in Broadview Heights.
