Even students who don't possess the ability to speak or write still have something to say. It is this belief that led Kephart to create an opportunity out of a situation where many would see none at all. "Bobcat Live" is an innovative newspaper that is written, edited and designed by students with communication impairments. Not only does it provide a unique vehicle of expression for students who might not otherwise have one, it also represents a chance for interpersonal growth and socialization with other students and members of the teaching staff. Students have varying degrees of communication disorders - from those who are completely nonverbal and unable to physically write to students with mild learning and cognitive disabilities - and require speech language therapy to address their educational needs. Approximately 12 students will become regular contributors to the newspaper and serve as writers, graphic artists and editors. All activities associated with producing the publication are developed to use the special talents of each student and at the same time promote literacy and functional communication. Kephart believes that collaboration between other journalism students will increase awareness and acceptance of students with disabilities. She lives in Brookings.
