Pleasant View Middle School
Welsh's winning idea, "Gnomon is an Island," was created to show students that science can be fun and that a meaning ful way to gain knowledge is through experience. In the program, instead of the students learning about sundials, they will actually become the sundial as part of an outdoor classroom they will build. The collective effort will bring together students from science, math, art, social studies, technology and geography classes to create a lasting area that will be unique in the world due to the inclination of the sun. The sundial will be the centerpiece of the outdoor classroom, which will also have stadium seating, a pond, and a succession plot. It will be the only analemmatic sundial in central Ohio and will be in close proximity to the Ohio State University and Perkins Observatory. Welsh, who lives in Dublin, hopes that the area will be a space for nearby students and astronomy enthusiasts to visit and enjoy for years to come.
